Stolen Bike Alert

It's getting ridiculous, very soon this is going to be..

Two bikes were stolen from a home in Hialeah near Red Rd & 103rd St earlier today. One bike is a white Cannondale road bike with blue rear triangle and lugged fork, the other is a new white Solé single-speed with orange deep v rims, front rim is machined for brake. 50cm light metallic blue SE Draft single-speed. No decals, black saddle & tires. Stolen this afternoon around 12:30pm from the MDC Wolfson Campus bike parking in downtown. Guess the security guard wasn't doing a very good job, but that should come as no surprise since bikes are frequently stolen from this lot.

Narrow gold Origin 8 riser bars, yellow "Oury" grips have been cut short, the "Y" is gone so they read "OUR".

Black one-piece cranks. Silver pedals, no straps. Dark pink chain.

Amateur Bicycle Race 1982 (Video)

I recently stumbled upon video footage from an amateur bicycle race in Miami circa 1982. I really enjoy vintage media from Miami and anything cycling related from the late 70s/early 80s so discovering this 30 year old video for the first time was a delight. The footage, grainy and with an announcer left me curious so I decided to contact the video publisher for the backstory on the race.

"The footage is from my dad, Rafael Ferrans. It was along Okeechobee Rd. and passes under the Florida Turnpike at some point. It was a total of 35 miles. My dad was part of the "Italian Team", although all of them are/were from Colombia. (My dad is at the beginning wearing all black with a white helmet.) Apparently my dad and some friends and friends of friends liked the fact that there were lots of professional races going on in the streets and highways at the time. They said, "Why don't we try it?" So they started their own amateur races." - Ralph Jr

The fact that it's "Italians vs Cubans" but the Italians are actually Colombian makes it so much better. It highlights the fun they were having with it and reminds me of a time when things were considerably more pure and simple ; Steel frames, cycling caps, toe clips & straps (gold chains optional). Style points to the Cuban racer with the PiL t-shirt. USA!

We will be riding through Downtown, East Little Havana, West Flagler, Coral Way, Little Havana, and The Roads. The route is available here, total distance slightly over 12 miles. It's strongly suggested that you print a copy of the map for yourself in case you are tardy. The ride stops/ends at The Filling Station, which offers specials on food & drinks for cyclists. It's conveniently located in the heart of Downtown Miami and just two blocks from Government Center.

Don't forget to bring bicycle lights. It's the law!

Please read the tips & guidelines to help you understand what is expected of all participants on this community ride. Cyclists ride at their own risk and assume responsibility for their own safety! This is a very big group, look out for one another.

We will be leaving at 7:15pm sharp. If you arrive late you will be left behind, the ride starts & ends in Downtown Miami. Rain or shine!

Ride America for Safe Routes

"Four ambitious women are undertaking a cross country endurance ride that will kick off in Key West on February 5, 2012 and culminate in San Francisco in late April. Two sisters, Jeanie and Chelsea Ward-Waller, their mother, Jane, and close friend Stephanie Palmer are riding across America to benefit the bicycle safety advocacy efforts of the League of American Bicyclists and the Safe Routes to School National Partnership. Dubbed "Ride America for Safe Routes" (RASR), their ride follows a route traversing 13 southern states and 20 major cities, logging over 5,000 miles between Florida and California. The mission of RASR is to raise $50,000 for the League’s Bike Friendly America program and for Safe Routes to School (SRTS) programs in local communities. In addition, the RASR Team will advocate the critical need for bike safety and promote the public health benefits of bicycling through events with local bicycle groups and SRTS programs in communities along their route. M-Path Extension Bicycle and Pedestrian Trail : Video

Check out this brief video tour of the almost completed M-Path Extension Bicycle and Pedestrian Trail project in Kendall. The footage is of the M-Path between 67th Avenue and the Dadeland South Metrorail Station, where the M-Path then connects to the South Dade Trail (busway). The new M-Path bicycle and pedestrian bridge will help users cross over the dangerous entrance ramp to SR 878/Snapper Creek Expressway. However, once the cyclist/pedestrian is off the bridge they'll encounter plenty of intersections along the path and must exercise extreme caution. The video is a great reminder of how poorly people drive in South Florida, in just a few minutes you can lose track of how many motorists fail to stop behind the white line as required by law. Unfortunately I couldn't get additional footage of the bridge because the construction workers were still on the job.

Overall the project shall be an asset to cyclists who are uncomfortable riding on the road along with motor vehicles. Pedestrians and those with disabilities will probably benefit most from the bridge. The crosswalks are properly marked but there is too many along the route giving it a sidewalk feel, the path's maze-like features and bicycle dismount sections are also impractical. In my opinion the best part of the M-Path extension project is the new section between Kendall Drive and the Dadeland South Metrorail Station, it is the most straightforward. I will continue to recommend experienced cyclists to use SW 80th St / SW 70th Ave (see below) to get around Dadeland Station and will personally use the bridge from time to time for a change of scenery and elevation.

If you wish to see the completed project in living color you should attend the M-Path Celebration Ride on Saturday, January 14th. Local bicycle & pedestrian advocacy groups are hosting the ride with an after party at a nearby park with cake & ice cream!. Based on what has been finished thus far, I cannot imagine the project being 100% complete by next weekend in time for the celebration. Nonetheless I encourage cyclist, pedestrians, runners, rollerskaters, etc to come out and show their support so local officials and advocates can see their efforts are appreciated.

Broward County is gearing up for the launch of its newest mode of public transportation with Broward B-cycle on December 14, 2011, in Hollywood, Fort Lauderdale, and Pompano Beach. The day marks the first county bike sharing system to launch in the nation and the first tri-city launch of its kind.

Broward B-cycle, an alternative form of public transportation, is facilitated by Broward County Transit resulting from an agreement between B-cycle and the Broward County Board of County Commissioners. It is an affordable, clean and simple way to get around town. Users can check out a bike from any self service station and return it to any other station nearby. The B-cycles are equipped with a GPS system that tracks mileage, calories burned and carbon offsets. To access the bikes, register on broward.bcycle.com or use a credit card at the self-service kiosks (B-stations). Users must be 18 years or older with a valid credit card.

The kick-off begins in Hollywood at 10 a.m., 326 Johnson Street; continues in Fort Lauderdale at 1:30 p.m. in Esplanade Park, 400 SW 2 ST; and concludes in Pompano Beach at the Pompano Beach Aquatic Center, 798 NE 18 Avenue, with a bike ride immediately following the 4 p.m. ceremony.

Broward County Vice Mayor Commissioner Kristin Jacobs, who spearheaded the initiative to bring bike sharing to Broward County, will preside at each municipal launch event. The events will feature a mass bike ride and include remarks from Humana Florida Commercial Operations President Tim Love, Hollywood Mayor Peter Bober, Fort Lauderdale Vice Mayor Bobby DuBose, Pompano Beach Mayor Lamar Fisher, and a representative from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). Residents, the business community and supporters are encouraged to attend the free events and take part in what is sure to be a memorable day in Broward County history.

B-cycle is a partnership among Trek Bicycle, Crispin Porter + Bogusky, and Humana, Inc., one of the leading health care companies in Florida and a presenting sponsor of Broward B-cycle. Funding is also made available from an intermodal grant in the amount of $311,000 from FDOT for bikes and infrastructure.

Red steel 54cm fixed-gear bike with front brake stolen Monday shortly after midnight (12/6) from outside The DRB on NE 14th Street/Biscayne Blvd. The bicycle was locked up with cable combo lock (not recommended) along to another bike, a Giant MTB, both were stolen. If you have any info contact James.

Tips:

Here's some advice for all local bicycle owners. If you currently do not have a recent photograph of your bike(s) and the serial number(s) recorded you should take a few minutes out of your day and do so. Far too often victims of bike thefts do not have a recent photo or any at all of their ride. Vague descriptions and stock photos of a bike which some what resembles yours is not the way to go. PHOTOGRAPH YOUR BIKE TODAY!

In recent weeks there's been an abundance of bike thefts reported in Miami. Unfortunately most of these thefts are being reported to us or on Facebook, Twitter, etc and not to the police. While I recommend using all of these media outlets to get the word out, it is still very important to call the police and file a report. Even if your bike is worth just $75, the police need to be made aware of this bike theft epidemic.

Also, if your bike has been stolen you should check Craigslist and pawn shops in the area to see if someone is selling your property.

The more information victims share regarding their loss (how, when, where), the better it may help other cyclists in the community not succumb to thieves.

Origin8 Cutler with black Aerospoke, blue tires, blue saddle and red bullhorns. Stolen in Wynwood on NE 2nd Ave/24th St on Thursday night 12/1. Contact Kristofer at (786) 344-4665 if you have any information, bike was stolen by a latin male in his early 20s. He snatched the bicycle from owner and rode off in NW direction.

This was not the only bicycle stolen last night in Wynwood. Also stolen was a vintage '66 blue Schwinn Varsity converted to single-speed. Brown saddle with rivets, riser bars and a Ritchey Pro front wheel. Contact Amy if you have any information.

On the last leg of the ride we will be stopping at The Filling Station for food and drinks. It's conveniently located in the heart of Downtown Miami and just a few blocks from Government Center.

"December 17 marks our third contest. In past times we've followed the traditional rules of a bmx contest, sixty seconds, most backflips wins. Not this year, This year our focus is to switch up the game and do it in a way that everyone wins. Our format is a bit different from what you might expect. The riders will be broken up into teams most likely consisting of five riders. Now no one knows who their going to be paired with. Our judges will select the team that they feel did the best run. The runs will be about 5 minutes, letting everyone have there way with what ever there trying to accomplish. Due to our group format & extended time, riders will have less pressure and more time to get creative. During these runs our judges will be looking for the best riders from each team. After all the teams have had there runs the judges will call out the MVP's of each team. These riders will then advance to a final 7 minute jam session where its every man for himself! 1st place through 3rd place riders will be chosen. And after that best team will be called.

This year our focus is to ensure a good time for everyone. None of this 60 seconds do your best trick but instead heres five minutes and a group of friends, ride and see where it takes you. No pressure just a normal skatepark session with some sweet prizes available!"

Cranksgiving 2011 Recap : Photos & Video

Excellent turn out for the 3rd annual Cranksgiving on Saturday, we had a total of 131 registered riders. The Camillus House was very pleased with our efforts and by the amount of non-perishable items we collected on bicycle. Thanks to Gary Medenhall, Eddy Stevens, all the sponsors and most of all to everyone who participated in this worthy cause.

The race started at 3:20pm and the top riders finished at approximately 4:27pm. Total distance was 17 miles and required stopping at five grocery store check points. Prizes and giveaways were distributed at Government Center and limited spoke cards were issued to those who dropped off their items at the Camillus House. After the event a group of us headed over to The Filling Station for food & drinks. Once again thanks to everyone involved and hope to see you all next year.

The City of Pleasant Living

The South Miami Community Newspaper is reporting that police officers will begin patrolling downtown South Miami on bicycles during the upcoming holidays.

The publication also has a piece on the Bike SoMi group which has been advocating for the City of South Miami to be nationally-recognized as a "Bicycle Friendly Community".

In other South Miami news.. unfortunately of the not so pleasant kind

Last Thursday night around 10pm at the intersection of Sunset Drive/US1 a female cyclist accidentally jumped a curb and fell of her Trek hybrid bicycle and broke her wrist. A black male in his 20s, no facial hair and wearing an orange & black jacket approached the cyclist and pretended to be coming to her aid, instead the suspect stole her bicycle while she laid helpless on the street. The bike is blue/silver and has a rear rack, RST fork and kickstand. If you see the Trek bicycle pictured below please alert the proper authorities.

Readers of the blog may not immediately recognize the bike because it was not in 'dolphin-mode' when it was stolen. The Trek hybrid belongs to the popular "Dolphin Bike Girl" which was mentioned here a few months back. The owner's name is Regina and we would like to wish her a speedy recovery.

Hopefully her bicycle turns up soon so she can continue to make people smile at Critical Mass.

It's back! Cranksgiving Miami returns for its third installment come Saturday, November 19th 2011.

For the past two years the Miami Cranksgiving food drive race & ride has been a great success. This year we're hoping to make it even greater by collecting more non-perishable goods for those in need this holiday season. This is a unique event and there is no other like it in S. Florida.

*Racing is not required, you can simply participate at your leisure if you desire. We want to include everyone, what's most important is the cause.

Participants will receive a map at the start of the race/ride with grocery store locations along with a shopping list (manifest). Riders will go to 5 grocery store checkpoints and buy the non-perishable food items off the checklist. There is no registration fee, the $10 goes to purchase the items. All collected goods will be donated to Camillus House at the end of the race. This is for a great cause and at the same time shines a positive spotlight on the local cycling community. Expect to spend about $2 at each grocery store. You will be required to keep all receipts.

The race/ride is tentatively 17 miles, speed is an obvious advantage but knowing your way around the city & the aisles of a supermarket can also help you significantly. Novice cyclists can opt to a shorter 9 mile ride, but will be disqualified from any prizes except "Most Charitable".

For those who prefer not to race, it's okay. There will also be prizes for most charitable! If speed is not your thing you can ride the event in a scavenger hunt fashion instead of a race. Last year 100 local cyclists participated making it the largest alleycat in South Florida, everyone had a great time and the Camillus House was very thankful for our efforts. Hope to see you there on November 19th, all bikes welcomed.

November is Men's Cancer Awareness month and we want to do our part in style by organizing a "moustache mandatory" ride around downtown Miami. Riders are asked to don their best facial hair designs and donate some pocket change to Movember, an international organization funding research for a cure for men's cancer. Movember challenges all men to grow out their moustace's during the month of November, in the spirit of masculinity, brotherhood, and a global effort to raise attention to cancer issues. The funds raised are directed to programs run directly by Movember and their men’s health partners: the Prostate Cancer Foundation, and LIVESTRONG, the Lance Armstrong Foundation. Together, the three channels ensure that Movember funds support a broad range of innovative, world-class programs in the areas of awareness and education, survivorship and research.

Men's natural moustaches are mandatory (but if you can't grow a moustache you are still welcome to come ride!)- any shape you love. Women's moustaches are recommended (and they can be fake, if they have to!).

The good news is you will get an extra hour of sleep tonight and it will be daylight for early morning rides from now until March 11th, 2011. The bad news is late afternoon rides will be at dusk and without proper lights you will not be visible to motorists. Please ride with lights at night, it's the law!

"Equipment requirements and carriage of passengers
(Section 316.2065(2), (3), (7), (8), and (14), F.S.)

A bicycle operated between sunset and sunrise must be equipped with a lamp on the front exhibiting a white light visible from 500 feet to the front and both a red reflector and a lamp on the rear exhibiting a red light visible from 600 feet to the rear.

Comment: Over half of fatal bicycle crashes in Florida occur after sunset, even though most cycling is done during daylight hours. Battery-and generator-powered headlamps are available. If a cyclist uses battery-powered lamps, it may be necessary to carry spare batteries or to mount additional lamps as spares (some LED lamps last for many hours). Rear reflector and taillamp should be aimed straight back. "

"DCC Kids, which provides three riding options for children between age 3 and age 13, connects younger cyclists to the goals and mission of the Dolphins Cycling Challenge, the two-day tri-county charity cycling event coordinated by the Miami Dolphins Foundation. The purpose of the DCC and DCC Kids is to raise awareness and collect funds for cancer research and treatment at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. By participating in the DCC Kids Ride, children will become engaged in the core missions of the Miami Dolphins Foundation: youth athletics, education, health, and volunteerism. In addition, the DCC Kids Ride participants will learn that cancer can affect everyone, not just adults, as the funds they raise will be designated to benefit children being treated at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.

As a part of the DCC Kids Ride, children between the ages 3 and 13 can ride one of three age-appropriate routes at Sun Life Stadium on the same day their adult counterparts arrive at the conclusion of their respective DCC routes. A “Tot Lot” for children between ages 3 and 5 will be located in the Grand Plaza of Sun Life Stadium; a “Rookie Loop” will be available for children between the ages of 6 and 9; and “Veteran Loop” is offered for children between the ages of 10 and 13. Along each route, a water stop will be positioned to provide DCC Kids riders with similar amenities to adult participants.

At the conclusion of the Kids Ride, riders will travel through the same tunnel that players run through on game day onto the field at Sun Life Stadium where the Finish Line Party will be taking place, honoring those who participated in raising funds and increasing cancer awareness.

"Mack Cycle’s MTB Rad Race is very similar to a type of mountain bike racing called 4x or mountain cross. 4 or more racers start the race together and compete on a wide, short and fast track. The race track more closely resembles moto-cross or BMX. The kickass track is designed for speed with jumps, banked turns and big drops! Winners of each heat qualify for the finals, held on the same day.

Racers must compete in all three races to qualify for the cash prize championship! The point based system will be explained by “Frenchie” at the Ocober 30 Rad Race! Riders must compete on mountain bikes. No BMX or hybrids allowed.

First heat starts at 8AM sharp. Top finishers of each heat advance to the next round. Spectators are welcomed. Riders are welcomed to bring 10×10 pop-up tents. There are no bathrooms, water or food at the location, so come prepared!"

Loose Cannons September Recap

About 15 riders showed up to last Thursday's race, a decent turnout considering the weather. Most people didn't realize this but the race was almost cancelled a few hours before the start and it wasn't due to inclement weather.

Late Thursday afternoon I received a phone call from Joel at IamYourVillain about having to postpone the race until October 6th because the Electric Pickle was temporarily shut down due to a code violation. Loose Cannons has been going on since January 2008 and we've never skipped a month so I did not want to break tradition now. After a little brainstorming I decided to ask Joel to just get two 24 packs and post up at the finish line anyways. We kept the venues temporary closure a secret and it worked out great, after the race we just posted up and drank all the beers outside. This marked the 45th Loose Cannons race! The whole ordeal reminded me of the time we had to hustle to make the epic April Fools' race happen due to PS14 closing its doors a few hours before the race. Loose Cannons is on the first Thursday of every month, next race is October 6th. Helmets and lights highly recommended.

Vintage Peugeot touring bike stolen from “secure” townhouse garage on 76th Street in Miami Beach on Saturday, September 3rd. The Peugeot had an original Pleitscher rack, but the thieves left the wooden wine box behind (as shown in the photo). The bike had sentimental value to the owner so he is offering a reward if found. The bike was locked to a 2003 Specialized MTB (silver in color), which was also stolen.

Florida Cyclocross season is upon us. The first CX race of the season will be held on October 9th at the North Point Trails in Virginia Key, a MTB Time Trial will also take place. All proceeds of the event will benefit the park.

Miami Critical Mass : August Videos & Photos

An estimated 800-900 riders participated in the monthly Miami Critical Mass ride this past Friday, August 26th. The group continues to grow and attract new cyclists each and every month. While some may view this as a positive thing there is certainly a downside to it, particularly with individuals who either race near the front of the ride, ride too slow within the group allowing gaps to form, and those who cross the solid yellow lines onto the opposite travel lane. The ride would be a much more pleasant experience for all parties involved (motorists included) if everyone adhered to the recommended tips & guidelines.

The ride is in dire need of guidance in the front, pace setters are essential if we wish to maintain a moderate speed of 12mph and to not allow others to advance past the front. August's ride turned out to be the quickest Miami Critical Mass since it's inception in 2007. This was mostly due to a group of selfish individuals who took off early from Government Center by yelling and amping up the crowd that it was time to go. These folks are not interested in providing a safe ride for the group which consists of men, women, children and even dogs. They do not help in corking duties nor do they coordinate with others about maintaining cohesion, they are simply there to have good time at everyone else's expense.

A lot of bicyclists anticipate Critical Mass on the last Friday of each and every month. I've seen it referred to as "an institution" and "a religious experience". It's so important to some that they schedule themselves off from work, drive from neighboring suburbs and/or take a train from many miles away to partake in this activity with other cyclists. However, when the ride begins it seems as if they are racing to finish. Why would any educated adult wait all month for something just to rush to the end? Why are some of you in such a hurry to get it over with? It's not a race, it's a community ride! Enjoy your once a month ritual with others, discuss bicycles, talk amongst your peers, share cycling stories or tips, make the moment last. If you can hold a conversation and maintain 12mph pace without any distractions go for it, but you folks chatting it up and allowing gaps to form because you're so caught up in a conversation that the group has left you behind, you probably should wait until the ride is over for discussions.

Many friendships have been fostered through Miami Critical Mass and there's no denying the rides have helped us build a stronger cycling community in South Florida. Unfortunately the ride seems to be losing it's direction and focus, if this continues the authorities will eventually take action, remember that BIGGER is not necessarily BETTER. We didn't patiently build this throughout the past 4 years for it to be destroyed within a few months. You are all equally responsible for this ride, if you don't agree then maybe you are part of the problem.

Oh, one more thing before I lead you to the photos & videos you came here for. Lose the mob mentality. The group seems to make some behaviors acceptable that would not be acceptable otherwise, whether it's around particular neighborhoods or around women. Certainly I'm not the only one who has taken notice and I'm ashamed to ride side by side with some of you.

The pub crawl conveniently ends near the Government Center Metrorail Station in Downtown Miami for those who wish to take the train back home vs riding.

Remember to bring a bicycle lock. A light is also recommended since it'll be dusk by the time we leave the last bar. The pub crawl should be over by 9:00pm. Cyclists ride at their own risk and assume responsibility for their own safety!

M-Path Bicycle & Pedestrian Bridge

The first section of the M-Path bicycle and pedestrian bridge over the entrance ramp to SR 878/Snapper Creek Expressway went up earlier tonight. The bridge is the most significant piece of a $4.5 million dollar M-Path extension project which is scheduled to be completed later this year. This is long overdue and welcomed by pedestrians and cyclists alike who have struggled for years to get from one side of the "goat path" to the other. Motorists are to expect some traffic delays on US1 near the ramp until 5am Monday and are advised to enter the Snapper Creek Expressway via SW 80th street.

We will be riding through Lummus Park, Overtown, Allapattah, Liberty City, Little Haiti, Upper East Side, Edgewater, Omni & Downtown. The route is available here, total distance just short of 12 miles. It's strongly suggested that you print a copy of the map for yourself in case you are tardy. The ride ends at The Filling Station in downtown Miami, two blocks from Government Center.

Please read the tips & guidelines to help you understand what is expected of all participants on this community ride. Cyclists ride at their own risk and assume responsibility for their own safety! This is a very big group, look out for one another.

We will be leaving at 7:00pm sharp. If you arrive late you will be left behind, the ride starts & ends in Downtown Miami. Rain or shine!

On the last leg of the ride we will be stopping at The Filling Station for food and drinks. It's conveniently located in the heart of Downtown Miami and just a few blocks from Government Center.

Riders are advised to immediately clear the street and not obstruct traffic outside the establishment once we arrive, please move yourselves and bicycles to the surrounding sidewalks and/or parking lot across the street.

The Filling Station will have specials for cyclists including $3 PBR tallboys and a $5 food menu (burgers, wings & veggie wraps), they also have indoor & outdoor seating plus an upstairs with televisions, foosball & air hockey. Bring a bicycle lock if you intend on going inside! See you there!

Up Lab Summer Meetings: Sketch & Ride

Our meetings usually take place indoors. This summer we’re trying something new: we’re bringing our meetings to the streets, where our intervention as architects, designers, artists, activists, environmentalists, professionals, students, children, adults, teachers, aliens, bums, etc in solving urban issues may be welcome, or in the least, brought to awareness.

The Concept:
The idea is to “Sketch & Ride”. We’ll be riding our bikes through different neighborhoods of Miami in order to observe, record, sketch, photograph, discuss, etc. key architectural elements featured in the AIA Miami Architecture guide as well as interesting architectural feats usually overlooked by such guides.

The Rides:
We have selected 4 routes, in 4 different neighborhoods and these will be related to 4 themes: Open Spaces, Education, Housing, and Art at the Urban Scale.

How Do I Ride?
Check out the itinerary and meet us in the beginning, middle or end of the ride. Get your bikes, rent one (for $5 at Scoot Skate & Bike – 1800 Biscayne Blvd) , borrow one, ride your skateboard, etc. Bring your sketch pads, pencils, or camera. Come out and observe Miami from a different perspective.

Stolen Bike Alert

2011 Specialized Tarmac Comp stolen this morning (Tuesday, 8/9) from under the I-95 overpass parking lot just before entering Key Biscayne. The bike has red handlebar tape (not pictured) & clipless pedals. The bicycle was locked on the Thule bike rack of owners car and was stolen while he left vehicle unattended for 10 minutes.

Routes
The Gran Fondo Colnago Miami offers a three route options for cyclists of all abilities:

Long distance – 100 Miles

Starting from Coral Gables City Hall, the 101-mile course will take riders onto the beautiful streets and avenues of Miami. Enjoy the distinctive architecture and tropical flora as the route continues to and through agricultural and palm growing areas. Aid stations are provided at some of South Florida’s best known tourist locations, a beautiful historic estate, a beloved fruit stand, and one of the largest test gardens in the US. The final leg returns riders to downtown Miami, paralleling the water and concluding in front of historic Miami City Hall, site of one of the world’s first air terminals and featured in the new ABC television show “Pan Am.”

Medium distance – 55 Miles
Short distance – 25 Miles

Starting at the Miracle Mile of Coral Gables City hall, the medium and short courses will take cyclists first through beautiful urban Miami, with its fine examples of Spanish architecture, and then out to the surrounding areas, through palms and tropical flora. The final leg of the ride returns to downtown to the Gran Fondo Expo, in front of historic Miami City Hall, where a lively post-ride pasta party will conclude the 2011 season of Gran Fondo USA.

And they turn out in droves for I Am Your Villain's monthly race Loose Cannons, which dangles quite the carrot: it always ends at a bar for drink specials and DJs. This month's Loose Cannons started at Cosola's Pizza in Coral Gables and ended more than five miles away at Electric Pickle for the weekly Loose Joints party, where DJs Benton and Mr. Brown played disco funk all night. The race has no rules, no set course, and awards more than $100 in drink tickets to winners, so it's always a good time. The Feast caught up with riders as they made it to the finish line safely, though at least one was sporting a little road rash -- and a chunk of exposed booty, as with all Miami parties."

Close to 1000 cyclists participated in the monthly ride this past Friday, July 29th making it the largest in Miami Critical Mass history. Thanks to all those who unselfishly help out with the ride and cork for fellow cyclists. Kudos to The Filling Station for the hospitality and quick service despite the large crowd, food and drinks were served with little to no wait.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind cyclists to clear the road once the ride is over, there's a large parking lot and wide sidewalks across the street from The Filling Station so there really is no reason to be blocking the intersection. The ride ended just 2 block from the Government Center to appease those needing to get back on the train, here's the short route for those curious on how to get back. I want to also remind participants to not ride on the opposite side of the street or on sidewalks during Critical Mass. Most importantly, in the event that any emergency vehicle needs to get through immediately move out of the way! Last but not least, please try to keep the pace at a moderate 10-12mph and close any gaps within the group. Time and time again attendees need to be reminded that these gaps are what ruin the cohesion of this large group ride. Let's keep it civil, fun and without altercations. There's some insightful tips here which you should read and ask all new riders to check out. See you next month.
