Tuesday, May 22, 2012 Wednesday, May 30, 2012 Miami-Dade County - Public Works And Waste Management will begin to add a new 6" vibratory edgeline to the left of the existing bike lanes on the William Powell, Bear Cut and West bridges. The "rumble strips" are intended to raise motorists awareness through increased noise and vibration if they happen to veer off the roadway and onto the bike lane. Some cyclists welcome the added safety measure, however many have raised their concerns on the issues a vibratory ridge can cause to riders attempting to pass another cyclist(s) on the left. The facility also does nothing to discourage speeding which seems to be the primary concern for recreational users of the Rickenbacker.
Below is the media advisory from Miami-Dade:
"The Public Works and Waste Management Department will modify the pavement markings on the Bear Cut Bridge, William Powell Bridge and West Bridge of the Rickenbacker Causeway to provide a safety improvement. The marked separation between motor vehicles and the bicycle lanes will be upgraded to a double white line with the left of the two lines incorporating vibratory ridges. This will have the combined effect of reinforcing the prohibition of motor vehicles entering the bicycle lanes as well as providing a vibrating effect to alert drifting vehicles.
This work is scheduled to begin on
Tuesday, May 22, 2012 Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at approximately 9 a.m., and should be completed by the end of the day, weather permitting.
During the installation of the pavement markings, a partial roadway closure will be in effect. The timing of the work is being scheduled to avoid the rush hour periods; however, motorists may experience traffic delays."

A ride to recognize, memorialize and honor those fellow cyclists who have tragically lost their lives while cycling
12:50pm - 3 Laps around the Race Course to signify the 3-foot law that motorists and cyclists alike should abide by. We are all so very fortunate to be able to enjoy the great sport of cycling, and because of this great fortune, we must recognize and honor those fellow cyclists who have tragically lost their lives while cycling. zMotion would like to invite all club members, zMotion affiliate members, all area cyclists, and racers from across the state to come out and participate in a three-lap ride honoring the aforementioned cyclists. The three laps will signify the 3-foot law that motorists and cyclists alike should abide by. Raising awareness about this law is everyone's responsibility and zMotion is committed to consistently communicating this effort.
