12' travel lane, 5' bike lane, 35mph speed limit

Earlier this evening, West Miami residents and businesses had the opportunity to view and discuss FDOT plans for a roadway project on SW 57 Avenue from SW 24 Street/Coral Way to SW 8 Street. The project includes constructing sidewalks, installing (drainage, decorative lighting, new traffic signs), modifying driveways, removing trees, planting trees, etc.

FDOT has also included bike lanes in their project plans on (Red Road), from SW 22nd Street to SW 10th Street.

Below are images of the FDOT plans, the turquoise lines represent proposed bike lanes. If traveling south on SW 57 Avenue the bike lane will end on 22 Street, if traveling north it will end on 10 Street. This is due to the lengthening of existing turn lanes and the addition of a left turning lane.

SW 10 Street to 8 Street

FDOT is trying to acquire land from The Biltmore School for the bike lane on the corner of SW 16th street, the current plans omit the bike lane because it is not on state property.

I didn't encounter any opposition towards the bike lanes during my short stay at the meeting, however I did see shop owners express concern with the road construction hindering their businesses. The construction is expected to begin in Spring of 2012, and last about 400 days.
