"In an effort to observe immediate changes to mobility within the County and to allow citizens to get involved in making change happen, Miami-Dade County’s Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW) is collaborating with local transportation non-profit, Green Mobility Network, to launch a Transportation Quickbuild Program. Funding for the development of this program has been made available by a $150,000 grant obtained by Green Mobility Network from the New York based non-profit Transit Center Agency.

Typical transportation projects take years to come to fruition and a significant amount of energy and funding from a variety of partners. The Miami-Dade Trasnporation Quickbuild Program will challenge this conventional paradigm and bring immediate results to the County. Ideal projects will be low cost and can be implemented quickly, such as proposals ranging from a crosswalk to a full bike lane.

The first phase of the program involves the creation of a contest, called the Quickbuild Challenge, where cities and citizens will submit ideas for quick-build projects within their communities. A selection committee will evaluate the projects, and present them to DTPW in a ranked order. The most impressive -- and feasible -- ideas will be tested by the Department, and if successful, have the option to be implemented permanently.

“Teaming up with Green Mobility Network and tapping into the tactical urbanism conversation is an opportunity for the Department to further engage the community and help develop transportation solutions together,” said Alice N. Bravo, P.E., Director of DTPW. “This way, we’re hearing directly from users who know what they want and we’re able to test projects they deem important that will lead to enhancing their experience.”

The Quickbuild Challenge will launch with a kickoff workshop co-hosted by Green Mobility Network at the Miami Center for Architecture and Design (100 NE 1st Ave, Miami, FL) on Jan. 30, 2017 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The contest will be open through May 1, 2017.
