Miami Marlins - Pedestrian and Bicycle Traffic

"Go green, get fit and avoid traffic all at once!" - Miami Marlins

While I strongly feel there's a need for better bicycle facilities surrounding the park (sharrows, bike lanes, etc), I still believe bicycling to the park is the best way to avoid traffic and parking woes. According to the Marlin's website there's bicycle parking stations available on the ground level of each of the four on-site parking garages. If you live within 5 miles of the stadium, I encourage you to get on your bike and give it a try.

Stolen Bike Alert

Grey Specilaized Crosstrail stolen on Friday, March 16th from 29th St & Collins in Miami Beach. The bike was locked to a bike rack using an OnGuard Doberman combination coil cable lock. The bike had a compass and a shark horn on the handlebars (not pictured). If you have any information contact Leann.

Once again folks, stop using these worthless cable locks. They are only good as back-up locks if you're already using U-Lock, and even then the bike is still at risk for theft.

Stolen Bike Alert

Stolen Bike Alert

* Recovered

White Linus Dutch 1 bike stolen on Saturday night (3/10) from in front of The Abbey in Miami Beach. The bike has a Delano Basket, silver bell, and leather grips. It was locked with a cable lock which the thief cut hand left behind. Contact Kylee if you have any information.

In similar fashion to the majority of bicycles being reported stolen in Miami, this bike was locked with just a cable lock. We cannot stress how worthless cable locks are, if you really want to keep your bike please use a 16mm U-Lock. Only use a cable lock as a bonus, i.e to protect a wheel or accessories. It's impossible to prevent theft but you can at least make it difficult for thieves.

Protect your bike(s) against theft by using at the very least a 16mm U-Lock like the one pictured below.

FDOT Meeting : SW 57 Ave Bike Lanes (Recap)

Thursday evening, residents from Coral Gables, South Miami, Coral Terrace, and surrounding communities gathered to view and discuss FDOT plans for two roadway projects on Red Road (SW 57 Avenue) from US-1 to Coral Way. The projects include the repaving of roads, sign upgrades, installing missing sections of sidewalks, upgrading pedestrian ramps, and accommodating 5' paved shoulders to serve as bicycle lanes. Also, the existing 40mph speed limit will be reduced to 35mph.

11' travel lane, 5' bike lane, 35mph speed limit

The lack of crosswalks and trees included in the project plans appeared to be the greatest concern among residents. Local advocates pointed out how trees would improve the appearance of the street, help slow down traffic, and provide some shade to cyclists and pedestrians.

Members from Bike SoMi, SFBC, and Green Mobility Network going over the plans.

A few small sections of the road will not include bike lanes due to space constraints caused by turning lanes, sharrows will be implemented in these sections instead. These portions of the road are near the major intersections (Bird Rd, US-1, Coral Way). For example, when approaching US-1 the southbound bike lane will end on SW 66th St and sharrows would begin. If headed north on 57th Ave from US-1 the sharrows will be implemented up to Brescia Avenue, the northbound bike lane will begin there.

SW 57th Ave - US1 / Ponce de Leon (Sharrows)

In early 2011 FDOT hosted a similar meeting regarding upgrades on 57th Ave between Coral Way and SW 8th St, if bicycle facilities on all three projects come to fruition then we will have close to 4 miles of bike lanes between US-1 & SW 8th Street by 2014. A bonus factor is the connection of the 57th Ave bike lanes to the already existing M-Path which runs parallel to US-1.

For more information on the scope of the project go here.

SafeStreetsMiami Forum

Wednesday, March 7th

O Cinema
90 Northwest 29th Street
Miami, FL 33127

Bicycle valet parking will be provided.

From Green Mobility Network, more information can be found on Facebook.

"The forum is the first major event in a long-term campaign being launched by Green Mobility Network called SafeStreetsMiami. The campaign’s major goal is to advocate for lasting changes that will make the streets of Miami-Dade County safer for all users—bicyclists, pedestrians, runners, children, families, people who can’t afford to drive, and motorists. The focus of the campaign is all of Miami-Dade County, not just the Rickenbacker Causeway, although we recognize that for many people the problems with the Rickenbacker are paramount.

The forum will (a) present information about current plans to improve the safety of streets in Miami-Dade County and (b) provide an opportunity for members of the public to make comments and ask questions of a panel of relevant elected officials and decision makers. Leaders in both Miami-Dade County and the City of Miami will be present.

Our intention is to organize follow-up meetings and discussions based on input from the forum and to provide a continuing opportunity for dialog and new ideas through the Green Mobility Network/SafeStreetsMiami website.

Green Mobility Network also intends to organize a follow-up forum during Bike Month 2013 (March). The purpose of the 2013 forum will be to assess what has been done and what changes and improvements have been made in the past year. The SafeStreetsMiami forum may become an annual event.

We believe that strong community-based advocacy is an essential element in creating safer streets in a complex, multifaceted place like Miami. The March 7 forum is an opportunity to begin to develop a consensus about what needs to be done and what the priorities should be."
