Wynwood Graffiti Bike Tour : Recap & Photos

"First and foremost we would like to thank everyone who in one way or another has helped piece together Graffiti by Bike.  We've succeeded in introducing 100+ people and all their people to public art in Wynwood, an international attraction just around the corner. It has turned out to be much more than we could have ever hoped for and the results have been magnificent. With this being only the second time we carry out the tour we have been able to introduce a number of residents to their neighborhood, exposed kids to the positive aspects of urban art and discovered great local businesses.

Special thanks to EMERGE Miami, Green Mobility Network and the South Florida Bicycle Coalition for volunteering their time to organize the ride and keep everyone safe,  Primary Flight for making our city internationally known,  Lombardi and Goldman Properties for providing wall canvases to beautify our neighborhood, MOCA for hosting a very informative lecture, Harry Gottlieb, City of Miami Cultural Affairs Director and James Quinlan from the Arts & Entertainment Council for their support,  Brook at Dorscht Gallery for much needed refreshments and access to their yard, Cafeina Lounge for opening their gates, and most importantly to all the artists who can see beauty beyond concrete walls and neglected neighborhoods.

As you may all know the tour was organized as a means to engage the community and promote active lifestyles. The idea is that cities adopt permanent and ongoing Open Street Programs like Bike Miami Days where residents, business owners and community organizations can all be introduced to each other and interact. These type of events benefit the community and neighborhood as a whole. This tour is a small effort towards that."

NYC Recap & Photos

As promised here's a brief recap & photos from my trip to New York last week. I brought my bike on the plane and spent most of my days and nights riding around the city. I think New York is a great place to ride, there were lots of bicycle lanes/paths/sharrows and it was easy to get around the boroughs. Some of my favorite places to ride were Central Park, Prospect Park, through Brooklyn to Fort Tilden, Palisades Park and Route 9W in New Jersey. I attended the Manhattan Critical Mass, opening day races at the Kissena Velodrome, Time's Up! First Saturday/Solidarity Ride to Brooklyn Museum, and the Five Boro Bike Tour. I also visited the Bicycle Film Festival, offices and was told the BFF is tentatively scheduled to come back to Miami, FL in November '10.

The Five Boro Bike Tour was amazing though painfully slow in some areas. Participants were allowed to ride on FDR Drive, Brooklyn-Queens Expressway and Verrazano Bridge to Staten Island where we then took the ferry back to Manhattan. 32,000 cyclists participated in the ride, check out the photos!

I spent Cinco de Mayo in ATL, today I'm in Huntsville, AL where they have a great bicycling community and strong monthly Critical Mass ride. It's been very difficult for me to access a computer hence the delay with updates. Tomorrow I'll be in Memphis, TN.

"The Ride Of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph and remain silent during the ride. There is no brochure, no sponsors and no registration fees. The ride, which is held during Bike Safety month, aims to raise the awareness of motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways. The ride is also a chance to show respect for those who have been killed or injured.

Cyclists will meet and set up at the Miami Seaquarium and gather at the west parking lot, Miami-Dade Police will control the traffic light at Mast Academy Drive. Once the cyclists are cued up and ready to go, police will hold inbound vehicle traffic. Cyclists will enter the roadway and travel on the inside vehicle travel lane, once the last cyclist in out, police will release vehicle traffic to travel on the outside lane. Vehicle traffic exiting the Village (outbound) will be routed onto the outside vehicle travel lane. Cyclists will continue their ride on inside inbound travel lane turning at the Crandon Park maintenance/firehouse circle, traveling westerly (outbound towards the mainland) in the center inside lane to the Mast Academy traffic light. At this point cyclists will turn and complete a send loop, returning to the point of origin. The ride will take place with the Miami-Dade County Police providing an escort type procession in marked squad cars. City of Miami, and Village of Key Biscayne Police will also provide services for the event.

The bike ride will depart from the Miami Seaqurium, west parking lot, on the south side of the Causeway and travel in an easterly direction (towards the Village of Key Biscayne) in the center inside travel lane of the Causeway, to the firehouse turn around loop prior to entering the Village.
