Miami Bike Hunt

Saturday, March 5th
Registration 12:00-12:45pm
Ride 1:00pm-4:00pm

Beached Miami and Emerge are hosting a bicycle scavenger hunt on Saturday, March 5th. The event is free, it's recommended someone on your team has a camera phone. All bikes welcomed.

Details:

1. Riders will break off into teams of 2, 3, or 4 (you can create your own teams, or we can put you in teams the day of the ride)

2. The teams will get a list of challenges, each worth a certain amount of points (the harder the challenge, the more points for completing it). For example, a challenge could be: “20 points: Find a man in a yellow speedo.” To complete the challenge, you have to take a cell phone picture of the man in a yellow speedo *with one of your teammates*.

3. At the end of the ride, each team sends *one email with all their pictures to bikehunt@beachedmiami.com*; we tally up the points each team earned; the teams with the most points get prizes. (Prizes TBA)

West Kendall Transit Terminal Bike Lanes

The new West Kendall Transit Terminal, located at 9155 SW 162 Ave, opens this Sunday, February 27th. The terminal is just west of The Hammocks and across the street from the new West Kendall Baptist Hospital. It includes a Park & Ride lot for passenger convenience and bike lanes for bicycle commuters.

The bike lanes are on the following roads:

SW 158th Ave, between Kendall Dr and SW 96th St
Private Dr, between SW 158th Ave and SW 162nd Ave
SW 162nd Ave/Ct, between Kendall Dr and SW 96th St
SW 96th St, between 152nd Ave and 162nd Ave

The future town center and hospital will soon make this a very busy area, the bike lanes are a positive asset. Overall the various lanes seemed adequate, however SW 158th Ave in particular was a mess with improper markings and signage. (see photos)

Turnpike Trail / Doral Bike Lanes

The new Turnpike Trail which runs parallel to the C-2 Extension Canal (117th Ave), between NW 25th St and NW 34th St is partially open. The multi-use trail is part of an ongoing canal bank restoration program, which will later expand the trail east along NW 25th St and north along 117th Ave taking it up to NW 58th St. The pedestrian/bike shared path is still under construction, earlier today contractors were installing a fence to prevent access to the Our Lady of Mercy Cemetery from the trail. I observed a few people from nearby businesses walking on the trail on what appeared to be their break from work. This section of Doral has no sidewalks so a trail like this is great asset to the community. The Turnpike Trail is open from dusk to dawn.

Also in Doral are two relatively new bike lanes. One on NW 74th St and the other on NW 112 Ave in a residential neighborhood. The NW 74th St bike lane extends between NW 87th Ave and NW 107 Ave. Those familiar with the area are aware that until recently NW 74th Street was non-existent between those avenues. Last week I rode through this two mile stretch while on a late night excursion and felt that the roads were well illuminated, free of debris and the lanes clearly marked. The scenery is quite nice and you forget you're in Doral for a few minutes, it reminded me slightly of U.S. 27. My only gripe is that the majority of the motorists were whizzing by at about 60mph.

Here's some video footage of the bike lane that helps put it's length into perspective.

NW 74th St, between 107th Ave and 87th Ave

NW 112 Ave, between 74th St and & 79th Pl

P.S. There's an ongoing reconstruction and widening project on NW 87th Avenue between NW 58th and 74th Street, however I do not know if bike lanes are in included in the plans.

Grand Opening of Virginia Key MTB Trail

This past Sunday hundreds of cyclists attended the grand opening of the Virginia Key North Point MTB Trail. Everyone in attendance seemed really ecstatic about riding the trails for the first time, there were a wide variety of riders present from experts to kids with their families, I even saw Commissioner Carlos A. Gimenez riding the trails. The parks proximity to the city and it's spectacular views will make this a popular attraction for south Florida cyclists for years to come. Currently there's a total of 4 miles of trail, about 50% novice and the other half intermediate with some advanced sections. Thanks to Frenchy, John Voss, ALL the volunteers, sponsors, and elected officials for making it happen.

Remember, volunteers are still needed to help maintain and expand the trails. Join the Virginia Key Bicycle Club on Facebook and see how you can contribute.

Have Fun, Ride Bicycles With Friends

That's the slogan on the new pro-cycling digital billboard which can be seen while traveling north on I-95 at NW 79th Street. The billboard was designed by Helena Garcia, and is part of the City of Miami cycling awareness campaign.

I've provided the actual art, since the photo above does not really do it any justice.

Beacon Lakes Bike Lanes

An actual beacon!

I went on a late night excursion and came across a few miles of bike lanes around Beacon Lakes business park, located at the intersection of the Florida Turnpike and 836, just west of Dolphin Mall. Pardon the photo quality, it was really dark out there, particularly on NW 137th Ave where the road is still under construction.

The bike lanes are on the following roads:

NW 137th Ave, from 12th St to 17th St *
NW 17th St, from 137th Ave to 127th Ave *
NW 127th Ave, from 12th St to 25th St
