Opa Locka Bike Lanes

Opa-Locka, the city known mostly for it's Moorish architecture, poverty and crime, and infamous ban on saggy pants, can now add bike lanes to it's list.

Unfortunately most cyclists in the area never utilize the bike lanes, instead they choose to ride on the sidewalk or the shoulder of the road. I think I've seen more people walking shopping carts against traffic in the bike lane than actual bicycle commuters.

The bike lanes are on the following roads:

NW 22nd Ave, between NW 119th Street and NW 151st St *
Ali Baba Ave, between NW 22nd Avenue and NW 37th Avenue
Perviz Avenue, between Oriental Blvd and Dunvad Ave
Opa-Locka Blvd, between NW 22nd Ave & NW 17th Ave

* Ends briefly between Rutland St and Ali Baba Blvd (while crossing SR9/Tri-Rail tracks)

View Opa-Locka Bike Lanes in a larger map

For the most part the bike lanes are free of hazards or debris, however broken glass can often be found outside the apartment complex east of Segal Park (NW 22nd Ave/Wilmington St).

If you're familiar with Opa-Locka you will definitely get a kick out of this clip from the 1968 documentary "Salesman".

Florida Bike Month Is Here!

March is Florida Bike Month, check out all the local cycling activities taking place in the events calendar. Floridians celebrate bike month two months ahead of the rest of the nation before the really hot and humid weather kicks in, while the rest of the country has recognized May as National Bike Month since 1956.

Personally, I'd rather celebrate Bike Month in May. I believe "Bike To Work Day" has never really taken off in Florida due to it not being in sync with the rest of the nation. I would really like to do a Car vs. Bus vs. Bike Commuter Race during 8am rush hour in Miami. If anyone is up for the challenge which would take place in May, leave a comment. I'll state the obvious by saying I will not be the one driving or taking public transit in this challenge.

Below are some event highlights for March:
FVA Thursday Night Track Racing Series, Loose Cannons, Miami Bike Hunt, Tour de Cure, 2011 Rosewood Series, Sixtwo Sundays, Get In Gear Bike Ride, La Noche Miami Criterium Race, Bicycle Film Festival, $100,000 BBPA, 3rd Annual Florida Bike Summit, Miami Critical Mass, Tweed Ride II, Core-Cat Alleycat Race, and EBC Snowbird Century.
