Miami Critical Mass June Photos & Video

A group of about 450+ cyclists attended Friday evening's Miami Critical Mass ride which took them through Little Havana, The Roads, Coral Gate, Shenandoah, Brickell and Downtown. Once again the rain and cloudy skies did not deter these cyclists from their last Friday of the month ritual. Thanks to all the corkers who help keep the group together, the ride go smoothly, although in recent months I've noticed less of them. I want to remind folks to slow down up front, we're not in a hurry to get anywhere and those in the rear cannot always keep up. The whole point is to ride in one large mass, those in the front who continue riding at +15mph only disrupt the flow of the ride and do everyone involved a disservice.

For those unaware, BAR, the establishment we have been stopping at post-ride since February 2010 will be closing down. We'd like to thank BAR for being so accommodating to all the cyclists over the past year and a half.

Next month we will be stopping at the The Filling Station in downtown Miami. Some of you may already be familiar with them from previous Beer Snob Bicycle Pub Crawls. The Filling Station is located just a few blocks from Government Center, they have great food & beer + outdoor & indoor seating. They also have an upstairs area with a foosball table, air hockey and televisions. They will have specials for all the cyclists also. More details in a few weeks.

Miami, FL 33132

"Attended the Sweet Treats Ride in June 2010? It's back! and we're covering Midtown to South Beach in this round of sweet shops: two ice cream shops and one bakery. Two out of three will have vegan options..more info to come!

This ride is part of a concept of "local eats " and will highlight local bakeries and sweet shops around town. It is part of a series of rides that will underscore Miami's own food businesses.
Suggested budget: $10 – 14 dollars if you plan on snacking at all stops. We will not be staying at any one place too long, but making a stop, snacking and riding on to the next stop. It is summer in Miami so bring sun screen and water." - Emerge Miami

Missed-Connection Connection

Last week I received an email from a reader who wished to share his Craigslist "Missed Connection" story and the interesting events that followed. Below is a summary in his own words.

"Hello,
As a fellow bike enthusiast and one who enjoys that your site brings so much of us together.... i was compelled to share this with you.

What was an earnest post about the creativity and joy in seeing some mysterious girl on a dolphin shaped bicycled on what would have been another mundane day

.... then some timed passed and this was received.

perhaps you or those in your community can share this in a (vain) attempt to deliver what was a cathartic message to tell those who would read it
(if not legitimize) the freedom we all feel on two wheels." - m

Understand everything thus far? I'll help fill in the blanks and add a few more details.

Two weeks after the classified was posted, local blog Beached Miami published one of Robby Campbell's illustrations from his ongoing MMC series based on real postings to the Missed Connections section of Craigslist Miami.

Here's where it gets really bizarre.

A few more weeks pass and Beached Miami fortuitously photograph the "Dolphin Bike Girl" at the last Friday of the month Miami Critical Mass. You really can't make this stuff up.

I encourage you to share this story with your friends, hopefully it will bring a smile to their faces whether on two wheels or not.

Congrats to Beached Miami on recently winning Miami New Times Best Of Award.

"Every Friday and Sunday, twenty or so people gather under I-95 at Jose Marti park in Miami and play polo on bicycles. WLRN-Miami Herald reporter Haley White joined the bicycle polo players last weekend. She learned how a funny-looking game played with mallets made out of ski poles has become a community-building force that supports a social movement."
